Steuart Pittman from Retired Racehorse Project will demonstrate how the dressage training pyramid applies to the retraining of a racehorse for any discipline. Rhythm, looseness, connection, straightness, impulsion, and collection are simple concepts that can guide the transition from a flat gallop to the balance and communication we seek in our riding horses.

Steuart Pittman operates Dodon Farm Training Center in Davidsonville, Md., where he trains horses and riders primarily for eventing, but also for other English riding disciplines. The farm maintains a stable of 25 horses in training. Steuart evented through the advanced and CCI*** levels, showed dressage through the fourth level, spent many years in the show ring and hunt field, and is Maryland's first U.S. Eventing Association certified instructor. After having served as president of the Maryland Horse Council and as the national campaign director for a grassroots network of community organizations, Steuart was well-prepared to launch the nonprofit Retired Racehorse Project in 2009. This organization, which now has 80,000 Facebook followers, was formed to combat the decline in value and popularity of Thoroughbred ex-racehorses in the riding markets.

She is a certified clinic instructor from the reputable Certified Horsemanship Association (CHA). Her specialty is starting young horses correctly. "The most important fact that I have learned about training all breeds of horses is that the trainer must be sensitive to when the horse is ready to give what is being asked. Clinician: Kenny Davis
Kenny Davis has been teaching horsemanship, and starting, working and training horses and their riders for more than 10 years. He is unique in that he teaches from a variety of disciplines – from Western pleasure to English equitation. He also believes in the significance of training horses and riders together, rather than separately. Influenced by master horsemen Ray Hunt and John Lyons, Kenny holds monthly clinics at Shokota' Equestrian in Powhatan County on topics such as despooking, tools in the toolbox and more.

Experience the different breeds of draft horses and see demonstrations of their different disciplines, like riding, pulling a cart, pulling a wagon, pole bending, etc. Learn of their heritage and what makes this breed so versatile.
Clinician: Melissa Wade
Melissa Wade, founder of the Draft Horse Education Foundation, and serving as Executive Director, co-owns Royal Knight Shires and has been breeding the magnificent Shire Draft Horse with her husband for over 10 years. Both her and her husband have been participating and helping conduct clinics at all of the past VA Horse Festivals and have been managing the draft horse show and pull for the State Fair of Virginia for the past four years. They train their horses and also teach others about draft horses and learning how to drive. They use their Shires for some farm work, take to shows, as well as use them for demonstrations and clinics. Melissa served as past President to the Virginia Draft Horse and Mule Association for the past four years.
